My name is David Benjamin (Benji) Garland, and I love to write copy, design visuals, dissect audiences, study brands, play rugby, record music, get outside, and eat pizza and Spanish ham (not together).

I’m a junior at UNC Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media studying advertising and public relations. Most recently, I interned at FCB New York as a copywriter, but I keep myself busy with freelance and spec work in my spare time.

VOODOO WING COMPANY

3.50 DRAFTS: This assignment was simple. VooDoo’s drink deals are top notch for Chapel Hill, so they wanted to drop flyers off at sorority and fraternity houses around town. I made this flyer for the mail drops.

STEP ASIDE BIG NAMES: VooDoo rivals big names on Franklin St. Just on their block, Raising Cane’s, Zaxby’s, Might As Well, and others occupy the chicken sandwich space. I thought this flyer could call back to the Chick-Fil-A vs. Popeye’s conversation by throwing an underdog into the now cluttered conversation. I aimed for the last two lines to be casual in tone but competitive in nature.
