My name is David Benjamin (Benji) Garland, and I love to write copy, design visuals, dissect audiences, study brands, play rugby, record music, get outside, and eat pizza and Spanish ham (not together).

I’m a junior at UNC Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media studying advertising and public relations. Most recently, I interned at FCB New York as a copywriter, but I keep myself busy with freelance and spec work in my spare time.

SKKOLAR

Skkolar QR: Nobody knew who Skkolar was, so I leveraged the mystery and placed a thousand QR codes around DC. Scanners felt a sense of discovery that earned me over 300 new monthly listeners on Spotify alone overnight.

Shirts that aren’t shit: I sell $15 shirts on skkolarmusic.com, and there’s nothing better than a high quality shirt that doesn’t break the bank. My college-aged audience is especially receptive to this, so I wrote $15 shirts that aren’t shit.

Benny Boy album cover: To portray my unique character mashup of student and rapper, I took a desk from my school and ripped out some sketches from a chem notebook. Luckily, my creative partner Hugo Shoots never misses the right shot.Benny Boy is here: My newsletter is meant to be concise and visually exciting. I’m still a beginner, but my official cover art announcement describes the how and why behind the cover to better connect with my audience and build hype.Headache single cover: Using four layers, I created the Headache cover from a generic photo of myself against a wall. The design was unique and repeatable, producing a follow up song’s cover in the same single series.
